From a spiritual and religious perspective, the day is believed to be highly auspicious for worship, fasting, charity, and prayers.
Why is Vat Savitri Vrat Observed?
Vat Savitri Vrat is mainly observed for the long life of the husband and a happy married life. According to Hindu beliefs, Goddess Savitri brought her husband Satyavan back to life from Yamraj through her devotion, determination, and spiritual strength. Since then, married women worship Goddess Savitri and pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands.
The word “Vat” means Banyan tree. In Hindu tradition, the Banyan tree symbolizes long life, stability, and positive energy. Therefore, women worship the Banyan tree on this day and tie sacred threads around it while performing parikrama.

Vat Savitri Vrat Story
According to mythology, in ancient times there was a king named Ashwapati whose daughter Savitri was extremely wise and virtuous. When the time came for marriage, Savitri chose Prince Satyavan as her husband.
Sages informed the king that although Satyavan was noble and virtuous, he had a very short lifespan and would die within a year of marriage. Despite this, Savitri married him.
After marriage, Savitri devoted herself to serving her husband and in-laws. As the predicted time of Satyavan’s death approached, Savitri began intense fasting and prayers.
One day, Satyavan went to the forest to cut wood and suddenly collapsed. Yamraj arrived to take his soul. Savitri followed Yamraj with complete devotion.
Impressed by Savitri’s dedication and determination, Yamraj offered her blessings. She asked for the eyesight of her in-laws, prosperity for the kingdom, and finally, children.
After granting the boons, Yamraj realized that children would not be possible without Satyavan’s life. Pleased with Savitri’s intelligence and devotion, he returned Satyavan’s life.
Since then, the tradition of observing Vat Savitri Vrat began.
